Dynamics 365 Business Central Shopify integration

Business Central ships with an official Shopify connector from Microsoft. We set it up properly, close the gaps it leaves, and build what it doesn't cover.

What syncs

What moves between Dynamics 365 Business Central and Shopify

Every flow is scoped up front - what goes where, which way, and how often.

ERP → Shopify

Items and variants

Items with Variants in Business Central become Shopify products and variants by item number, including attributes, barcodes and images.

ERP → Shopify

Prices and customer price lists

Store pricing comes from BC; for B2B, customer price lists map to Shopify Plus catalogues.

ERP → Shopify

Stock by location

Inventory by BC location maps to Shopify locations, with available stock after open orders.

Shopify → ERP

Orders

Shopify orders become Sales Orders in BC with lines, discounts, shipping and payment, then move through picking, shipping and invoicing.

Both ways

Customers

Customers are created or matched by email and phone; B2B customers get payment terms and a price list.

ERP → Shopify

Shipping and tracking

Posted Sales Shipments update the Shopify order with status and tracking, and the customer is notified.

How it works

Five steps, no surprises

From a short scoping session to ongoing maintenance. You know at every point what's being built, what's been tested and what's live.

  1. 1

    Scoping: what connects to what

A short working session where we mark exactly what moves between Dynamics 365 Business Central and Shopify, and in which direction: products and prices, stock by warehouse, orders, customers, invoices, shipment status. You leave with a short, plain spec and no surprises later.

  2. 2

    Access and permissions

We set up a dedicated API user in Dynamics 365 Business Central with the minimum permissions it needs, and a custom app in Shopify with exactly the scopes required. If you have a sandbox or test company, we build against that first.

  3. 3

    Field mapping and build

We map SKUs and variants, price lists and tax, shipping and payment methods, then build the integration on our own service with logging and alerts. Every business rule you have - what happens when an item sells out mid-checkout, for instance - gets a defined behaviour.

  4. 4

    Testing in parallel

We run test orders end to end, stock scenarios, returns and credit notes, and check that the numbers in Dynamics 365 Business Central and Shopify match exactly. Only once everything reconciles do we connect the live store.

  5. 5

    Go-live and maintenance

We launch with monitoring on and watch the first days closely. Later changes - a new field, another warehouse, a second store, a rule that changed - are an update to an integration that already exists, not a new project.

The technical side

How we connect to Dynamics 365 Business Central

The official connector first

Microsoft's Shopify Connector is built into BC Online and covers items, stock, orders, customers and shipping. We start there and configure it around your warehouses, price lists and stores.

Extensions in AL

Where you need something the connector doesn't do - custom fields, stock rules, several stores with different logic - we write an AL extension or an external service against BC's APIs.

Online or on-premises

On BC Online the connector is available immediately. On-premises we work through BC's APIs (OData/REST) with secure server access.

Tax and compliance

Tax, invoicing and statutory reporting stay in BC with your localisation partner's setup; Shopify receives the document for the customer.

Timing and logic

The connector runs on a Job Queue at the interval you choose; with an external service, orders move immediately via webhooks. Every run is logged, every failure raises an alert.

Frequently Asked Questions

There's an official connector. Why do we need you?

The connector does the basics. Configuring it correctly - warehouses, price lists, variant mapping - plus multiple stores and your own stock rules is where most projects stall without help.

Can we connect several Shopify stores to one BC company?

Yes. The connector supports multiple stores, and where each store needs different logic we add an extension.

Can we start with part of it and extend later?

Yes, and it's what we recommend. Start with whatever hurts most - usually stock and orders - then add invoices, B2B customers or another store as an update to the integration you already have.

Do you work with Shopify Plus?

Yes. Shopify Plus adds native B2B, company price lists and checkout extensibility, and we use them wherever they make the integration simpler or more capable.

We're on BC on-premises. Is that possible?

Yes, through BC's APIs with secure server access. The built-in connector is only available on Online, so on-premises we build an external service.

What happens when something fails, like an order that doesn't come through?

The integration retries automatically, and if the problem persists it sends an alert with the order and the reason. Everything runs through a queue, so any order can be replayed. No order disappears quietly.

How long does it take?

It depends on scope. Connecting stock and orders is faster than a project with B2B price lists and several warehouses. After scoping you get an exact timeline before anything is built.
